The agriculture sector plays a pivotal role for economic development of Bangladesh. The timely and reliable statistics of agricultural sector is the basis for measuring development of this sector. The Yearbook of Agricultural Statistics is an annual publication of Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) containing core-statistics of crop, fisheries, livestock, forestry and other related sub-sectors such as meteorological information, agricultural inputs (seed, fertilizer, monthly agricultural wage, irrigation), land use, results of Agriculture Census, crop prices, exports and imports of agricultural products & inputs etc. The publication provides annual estimates of area and production of 146 crops (major and minor) among which 6 are major crops (Aus, Aman, Boro, Wheat, Potato and Jute). Both objective (collection of data from direct observation) and subjective (collection of data through farmers’ interview) methods are used for crop estimation. For considering the major crops estimation these methods are used as process of croschecking. The difficulty in preparing this publication is that data produced by other agencies are not always available in time and in a suitable form. Sometimes, it requires to rearrange data for inclusion in the publication.
